This year was very special for us - we became part of the World where people are called sailors. This is really a proud word to call yourself, a sailor. This is really a different world. We are having an amazing experience, sailing trough the South Pacific and meeting more and more nice people on the passage. We felt a little special, because for a while, we had not seen any other Russian sailors in the South Pacific. We were very excited to see boat called "Little Qwin" for some reason sailing under the Swedish flag, the couple called themselves "Russians" (Ukrainians).
Patriotic feeling was way high and we could not really realize who those people were. Some of our friends saw their sailboat and it is in the very bad shape. They called them "Gypsy". I have been trying to stand up for "Russians" and explained that they have been sailing for the 11 years (I was wrong, because I find out they been living in some countries for years and years). We heard their stories, which they were completely broke and have been trying to help them, as much as we can. We gave them what we could, help them, feed them...At some point, we realized, that we had been used and abused. We tried to understand this, that this is their life style, by their choice. They’re asking for help trying to explain that they can not survive in Russia. People been listening them and believe that "Yes" they poor because is no way to make money in Russia. That not truth. They do not want to work. With this life style, they would not be able to live on the land. They would be called homeless. But this is a perfect opportunity for them to use the sailor’s hospitality. They told us that one the Swedish sailor asked them not to use the flag of his country. One of Russian marine blogs, they called them "sea gypsy", after reading their blog, and were ashamed that they are giving the wrong impression of Russians.
Articles in their blog is very negative and sarcastic. Please do not have impression about russian sailors. Not to many boats in South Pacific , but they will come. A lot russians explorers been in South Pacific in early 19 century. Some atolls on the area of Marshall islands has russian names.
I’m very ashamed that they called themselves Russians. Or even sailors. They are not! They are Gypsy!
My suggestion, just stay away!
